Let the Melon Games Begin

City of Howell Media Release

Howell, MI, July 24, 2009 - A melon patch and melon games are all part of the fun at Melon Fest in downtown Howell, August 14-16.

In the melon patch, located behind the courthouse, children 3-12 can play in inflatable play structures and make crafts on Saturday and Sunday. There will be a bubblegum blow with prizes for the biggest bubble, melon straw hat painting, face painting and street bowling
sponsored by Howell Bowl-E-Drome. Thumb print ceramic art from The Ceramic Studio is also available in the melon patch.

Teens will want to visit the melon grove and concessions, located in the parking lot behind 204 W. Grand River. The grove is a place to hang out with friends and play on the incredible, supersized inflatables.

Scribble the sidewalks, sponsored by the Livingston Arts Council, in the courthouse amphitheatre brings out the creative talents of all ages with sidewalk chalk art on Saturday from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Get creative in a more scientific way at the mad science booths on Grand River and make slime, whirley gigs, ultraviolet color changing beaded brackets, spin art and cotton candy. With Boogie Heads technology on the courthouse lawn, guests can even star in a Melon Fest music video. Boogie Heads is a high tech video rig that superimposes your head onto professional dancer's bodies via the green screen effect and makes a music DVD on the spot.

Looking for more adventure? Participate in the melon toss and melon sports listed below.

Melons get Tossed and Catapulted

Although one might find the melon balls at Melon Fest in a fruit salad, it's also likely visitors will see melons being used as balls and launched from homebuilt catapults as part of the Melon Toss competition on Saturday from 1 - 4 p.m. at the corner of Clinton and Center Streets.

"The Melon Toss is similar to popular punkin chunkin contests," said Debbie Mikula, Director of the Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority. "Teams will create their catapults before the event, have time to practice, then start tossing their melons toward a target 200 feet away."

Contest rules can be downloaded at howellmelonfestival.com. The Melon Toss is sponsored by Three Fires District of the Great Sauk Trail council, Boy Scouts of America.

Melon Sports go Big League

The Howell Area Parks and Recreation Authority has planned a line up of sporting events - all with a twist of melon.

Listen for the starting gun on Friday at 6 p.m. at the 32nd Annual Howell Melon Run. The run starts and finishes at Clinton and State Streets.

On Saturday morning at 9 a.m., join bicyclists at the historic Livingston County Courthouse for a new event - Doc May's Commemorative Melon Ride, a 15 mile bike tour through Howell.

Melon Heads get Painted to Promote Melon Fest in Howell

City of Howell Media Release

Howell, MI  August 3, 2009 - It's a Melon Fest activity that generates a second look.

The first look, so to speak, will happen on Tuesday, August 11 at 10 a.m. at the Howell MainStreet and DDA office located at 122 State St.

Downtown's own Melon Heads, including Dave Bagwell of Quality Dining and Melon Fest co-chair Jeff Hansen, will get painted up to promote the first annual melon head and melon face painting contest.

Howell body artist Andrea O'Donnell will paint the Melon Heads on August 11. She has won national awards for her work.

The second look happens during the actual modeling, judging and awards contest scheduled on the courthouse lawn from 6 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 15th during Melon Fest weekend, August 14-16 in downtown Howell.

"We've used a lot of creative license when planning Melon Fest activities," said Debbie Mikula, Director of the Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority. "Our search for all-things melon gave us the idea to ask guests to paint their own melon heads and faces with body paint and show off their artistic talents."

For those who need some professional artistic help, O'Donnell will be face painting at Eclectic Twyst on Grand River Avenue from 12 to 6 p.m. on Saturday. There is a charge for this activity. In addition, she will be body painting live mannequins for a show under black lights at Eclectic Twyst from 8 to 10 p.m.
